The Redefinition of Truth

Once truth becomes narrative, whoever controls the narrative controls the mind.

by Richard P. Weigand

I am angry at what has been done to truth.

Truth has not disappeared.

It has been redefined.

We still use the word. We still claim it. We still appeal to it. We still hear it in courts, classrooms, science, journalism, politics, therapy, religion, medicine, and ordinary life.

But the meaning has been bent.

Truth once meant what is.

What actually happened.

What corresponds to reality.

What remains true whether I like it or not.

What can correct me.

Now truth is often made to mean narrative, perspective, consensus, identity, lived experience, official position, emotional certainty, or institutional agreement.

The word remains.

The authority has been moved.

That is the trick.

You do not have to deny truth openly.

You can redefine it until it no longer has the power to correct anyone.

The Old Truth

Truth was once higher than opinion.

That matters.

Truth was not what I felt. It was not what my group preferred. It was not what my side needed. It was not what made me comfortable. It was not what protected my identity or served my interest.

Truth stood outside me.

That is why it could correct me.

That is why it could humble me.

That is why it could save me from my own error.

A man could be wrong.

A group could be wrong.

A government could be wrong.

A church could be wrong.

A newspaper could be wrong.

A scientist could be wrong.

A whole age could be wrong.

That was the dignity of truth. It did not belong to power. It did not belong to popularity. It did not belong to feeling. It did not belong to the loudest mouth or the largest institution.

Truth was not ours because we possessed it.

It was ours only when we aligned with it.

The New Truth

The new truth is smaller.

That is what angers me.

It is sold as sensitivity, sophistication, tolerance, compassion, science, democracy, inclusion, and awareness. But much of it is not an expansion of truth.

It is an escape from truth.

Truth becomes “my truth.”

Truth becomes narrative.

Truth becomes what experts currently say.

Truth becomes what institutions approve.

Truth becomes what platforms allow.

Truth becomes what a group needs to believe.

Truth becomes what produces the desired outcome.

Truth becomes whatever cannot be questioned without penalty.

That is not truth.

That is authority wearing truth’s clothes.

Once truth is redefined this way, correction becomes nearly impossible. A fact can be treated as an attack. A question can be treated as harm. A disagreement can be treated as hate. Evidence can be treated as misinformation if it threatens the approved story.

That is not a search for truth.

That is protection of a script.

Truth Without Correction

Truth cannot survive the removal of correction.

This should be obvious.

If truth cannot correct us, it is no longer truth. It is decoration. It is branding. It is emotional furniture. It is something we arrange around ourselves to feel justified.

Truth has teeth.

It can say no.

It can say I was wrong.

It can say my side lied.

It can say my cause exaggerated.

It can say my pain is real, but my conclusion is false.

It can say my intention was good, but my action was destructive.

It can say the expert missed it.

It can say the official story does not fit the evidence.

It can say the institution protected itself.

It can say the majority lost its mind.

A truth that cannot do that has been domesticated.

It has been made safe for power.

I am angry at that.

I am angry because people are being taught to fear correction while calling that fear enlightenment.

They are being trained to treat truth as injury.

They are being told that comfort is a higher authority than reality.

That is a deep betrayal.

The Managed Mind

The redefinition of truth serves power.

A person who believes truth exists outside approval is difficult to control. He can look. He can compare. He can notice. He can ask for evidence. He can separate fact from repetition. He can see when language is being used to hide conduct.

He can say, “That is not true.”

That is dangerous to systems that depend on managed perception.

But a person trained to think truth is narrative is easier.

He can be moved from story to story.

He can be told which facts matter and which facts are dangerous.

He can be trained to confuse repetition with evidence, credentials with truth, consensus with certainty, and censorship with safety.

He can be made to doubt his own eyes if the approved language tells him to.

That is the managed mind.

It does not need chains.

It needs frames.

It needs categories.

It needs slogans.

It needs approved sources.

It needs fear of exclusion.

It needs the steady suggestion that only bad people question the story.

That is not education.

That is perception management.

The False Compassion

The redefinition of truth often comes wrapped in compassion.

That is part of the method.

We are told that truth must be softened, adjusted, withheld, rephrased, managed, or replaced because people are fragile.

We are told that disagreement wounds.

We are told that facts can harm.

We are told that reality must bend to protect feelings, identities, and institutional goals.

But compassion that requires the corruption of truth is false compassion.

Real compassion does not lie to protect decline.

It does not flatter confusion.

It does not call error identity.

It does not hide consequence.

It does not make reality the enemy.

Real compassion helps a person face truth with enough strength to live better.

False compassion protects the person from truth, then calls the resulting weakness care.

I am angry at that.

I am angry because it robs people of reality itself.

And a person separated from reality is not protected.

He is made dependent on whoever controls the story.

The Restoration

Truth must be restored to its full meaning.

Truth is what is.

Truth is what happened.

Truth is what corresponds to reality.

Truth is what remains true even when I dislike it.

Truth is what can correct me.

Truth is not cruelty.

Truth is not hate.

Truth is not harm.

Truth is not whatever power says today.

Truth is not whatever feeling demands.

Truth is not whatever a group needs.

Truth is not whatever protects the institution.

Truth belongs above us, or it becomes a tool beneath someone else.

That is the point.

A redefined man can be managed.

A redefined freedom can be granted as permission.

A redefined truth can be controlled as narrative.

And once truth becomes narrative, whoever controls the narrative controls the mind.

That is why the redefinition of truth matters.

It is not a side issue.

It is not a word game.

It is part of the central reduction.

Redefine truth downward, and correction dies.

Restore truth as reality, and sanity becomes possible again.

I am angry because truth is being renamed until lies can rule without being called lies.

I intend to stay angry at that.

Cleanly.

Because a culture that cannot be corrected cannot be saved.
