The Redefinition of Man

We are being redefined in someone else’s image, not our own.

by Richard P. Weigand

I am angry!

We are being redefined in someone else’s image, not our own.

Man has not disappeared.

We have been redefined.

We still walk, work, love, suffer, choose, create, destroy, try again, and know more than we are supposed to know.

But the language around us has changed. And when the language changes, the treatment changes.

That is the trick.

The thing does not have to be removed. It can be redefined out of existence.

Bear with me.

You change what the thing is allowed to mean.

The Reduction

We were once understood as moral beings.

Spiritual beings.

Rational beings.

Responsible beings.

Beings capable of truth, conscience, choice, discipline, loyalty, sacrifice, beauty, guilt, repentance, repair, and greatness.

That understanding has been reduced.

We are now explained as biology, chemistry, behavior, psychology, trauma, identity, class, race, sex, appetite, data, patient, consumer, voter, demographic, and category.

Those descriptions may each touch something real. That is why the reduction works.

We have bodies. We have history. We have wounds. We have group memberships. We have desires. We have pressures. We have measurable behaviors.

But none of that is the whole of us.

The crime is not that these descriptions exist. The crime is that they are used to replace the whole person.

A man becomes his diagnosis.

A child becomes an identity.

A citizen becomes a demographic.

A student becomes material for programming.

A patient becomes a revenue stream.

A worker becomes a managed unit.

A mind becomes a system to shape.

A soul becomes a word no serious institution is allowed to use.

That is not understanding.

That is erasure by description.

The Method

Redefinition does not usually arrive dressed as conquest.

It arrives dressed as help.

It sounds educated. It sounds compassionate. It sounds scientific. It sounds therapeutic. It sounds administrative.

It says it is only updating language. It says it is only reducing stigma. It says it is only following science. It says it is only making systems more inclusive, more efficient, more modern, more humane.

But language is never only language.

Change the word, and you change the thought.

Change the thought, and you change the conduct.

Change the conduct, and you change the law.

Change the law, and you change the culture.

Change the culture, and you change what a human being is permitted to be.

That is why I am angry.

I am not angry because language changes. Language always changes.

I am angry because the changes so often move in one direction.

Downward.

They reduce us.

They flatten us.

They remove conscience and call it conditioning.

They remove responsibility and call it trauma.

They remove evil and call it maladjustment.

They remove truth and call it narrative.

They remove freedom and call it permission.

They remove compassion and call it affirmation.

They remove education and call it programming.

They remove law and call it management.

They remove the soul and call it psychology.

Then the same institutions that helped reduce us claim authority over what remains.

No.

That deserves anger.

The Managed Human

A whole human being is difficult to manage.

That is the part no one wants to say out loud.

A whole human being has conscience, memory, judgment, duties, loyalties, honor, and the ability to say no. He can refuse the category. He can recognize the lie. He can stand on truth when pressure rises.

A reduced human being is easier.

A biological organism can be treated. A consumer can be marketed to. A voter can be manipulated. A patient can be managed. A student can be programmed. A worker can be optimized. A citizen can be nudged. A body can be altered. A mind can be conditioned.

A soul that has been renamed out of public reality offers less resistance.

That is not an accident.

The whole person is dangerous to systems that want control. Not because he is violent, but because he is answerable to something higher than the system.

That is the part being removed.

That is the part being explained away.

That is the part being renamed until it no longer has standing in public life.

And once that happens, every institution begins to change.

Schools stop forming judgment and start managing identity. Medicine stops serving the person and starts managing systems. Law stops protecting responsibility and starts engineering outcomes. Politics stops addressing citizens and starts mobilizing categories. Media stops informing minds and starts managing perception.

The result is not liberation.

It is administration.

The person is not freed.

He is handled.

The False Compassion

This reduction often comes wrapped in compassion.

That makes it harder to oppose.

Who wants to sound cruel? Who wants to sound backward? Who wants to sound indifferent to pain?

But compassion that requires the reduction of man is false compassion.

Real compassion sees the whole person. It sees suffering without erasing responsibility. It sees wounds without abolishing choice. It sees weakness without denying strength. It sees confusion without surrendering truth. It sees need without making need the whole identity.

False compassion makes man smaller, then congratulates itself for protecting him.

It lowers the standard.

It removes consequence.

It excuses decline.

It calls this mercy.

I am angry at that.

I am angry because it cheats the very people it claims to help.

It tells us we are less than we are.

Less capable.

Less responsible.

Less free.

Less able to rise.

Less able to answer.

Less able to choose.

Less able to repair.

That is not kindness.

That is betrayal with a soft voice.

The Restoration

Man must be seen whole again.

That is the point.

Not as chemistry alone. Not as trauma alone. Not as identity alone. Not as class alone. Not as race alone. Not as appetite alone. Not as data alone. Not as a machine.

We are beings who can know, choose, love, create, destroy, repent, repair, rise, fall, and answer.

We are capable of truth.

We are capable of duty.

We are capable of honor.

We are capable of guilt.

We are capable of freedom.

We are capable of evil.

We are capable of greatness.

Any system that cannot see this will eventually mistreat us, even while claiming to help us.

That is why the redefinition of man matters.

This is not a side issue.

It is not a semantic dispute.

It is not academic fog.

It is the central fight.

Because once man is reduced, everything built for him is reduced with him.

Education is reduced.

Medicine is reduced.

Law is reduced.

Politics is reduced.

Compassion is reduced.

Freedom is reduced.

Justice is reduced.

And after enough reduction, people begin to forget what was taken.

I am angry at that.

I intend to stay angry at that.

Not wildly.

Not blindly.

Cleanly.

Because some things deserve anger.

And the reduction of man is one of them.
